What BB/9 Means
BB/9 stands for walks per nine innings. It tells you how many free passes a pitcher hands out over a full nine-inning span, scaling raw walk totals into a rate so you can compare a starter who throws 200 innings against a reliever who throws 60. A pitcher with a 2.0 BB/9 walks two batters every nine innings; a pitcher at 5.0 BB/9 walks five. Lower is better. It is the cleanest single-number proxy for command — the ability to put the ball where the pitcher wants it — because walks are almost entirely the pitcher's doing, with no fielders or luck involved.
How BB/9 Is Calculated
The formula is straightforward:
BB/9 = (Walks × 9) ÷ Innings Pitched
If a pitcher issues 50 walks across 180 innings, that's (50 × 9) ÷ 180 = 2.5 BB/9. Intentional walks are included in the standard calculation, though some analysts strip them out (uIBB, unintentional walks) to isolate true command. Hit-by-pitches are not counted as walks here.
